Think Yourself Slim

It sounds crazy but it's true - your thoughts can influence how much weight you lose, or whether you lose weight at all. Get into the right frame of mind and you'll find that the pounds will soon start to fall off.

There aren't many of us that can lose weight easily. Most of us start off on our diets or eating plans with every good intention but eventually end up in the biscuit tin. But have you ever asked yourself why? It may well be that your chances of success are being reduced simply by the way you think. Creating the right mental attitude for yourself may seem obvious, but in truth many slimmers don't give it much thought.

Losing weight isn't just down to healthy eating and exercise - it's a state of mind, and there's a lot you can do to help yourself. We've listed 10 things that you can do to help get your brain into gear and create your weight loss mentality.

1 - Stay On Course
Have a realistic goal that will give you direction as you work towards it. It could be anything - a special occasion, a holiday, overcoming a health problem - it doesn't matter so long as it's something that is important to you that you can visualize.

2 - Think Ahead
The path to successful weightloss is fraught with obstacles, but if you anticipate them you stand a much better chance of overcoming them. If you have an occasion coming up, think about what challenges may arise beforehand. It may mean you don't do the usual and head straight for the buffet table.

3 - Be Sociable
Have a quick check of the people you know - are they likely to encourage you or put you down? Surrounding yourself with positive people will increase the chances of you remaining enthusiastic and confident.

4 - Think Positive
If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts, such as "I've done so well, I deserve a little treat", turn it into something like "I've done so well, I'm not going to blow it now for the sake of a little piece of chocolate cake."

5 - Keep Talking
You might get some strange looks, but saying to yourself "I'm eating really well and it's making me look and feel great" really does help. You'll soon find yourself feeling it as well as saying it.

6 - Take Pleasure
Losing weight does not need to be boring. If you don't like going to the gym, then take up something like belly dancing. Pleasure and fun are the keys here, pick something that you enjoy so that you won't need any motivation to do it.

7 - Eat Right
Remember that you have a choice about the foods you eat. Try not to see foods as good or bad - the forbidden food always seems more attractive. Tell yourself that you could eat it if you wanted to, but you're just choosing not to right now.

8 - Keep Track
Rate your next craving or hunger pang on a scale of 1 to 10. Only eat if you register over 6. Don't leave it until 9 or 10 because you'll eat too much. Rate your fullness too, you'll stop eating sooner.

9 - Don't Stop
It's not going to be a perfectly smooth journey, but treat the blips as minor setbacks instead of failures. We all fall off now and again but it doesn't mean the end of the ride. Just climb back on there the next day.

10 - Visualize
Your imagination is incredibly powerful. Regularly close your eyes and see yourself slim, think how it feels, how you would stand, how you would speak and move. The more vividly you can imagine it, the more your subconscious will believe it and help make it happen.
