Walking and Weight Loss

I've been on a number of diet and exercise programs over the years and ironically I have achieved the most success through combining dieting and a common everyday activity - walking and weightloss.

Walking and weight loss go hand-in-hand. It may seem too simple to be true, but I have had more success losing weight and keeping weight off through a walking program than I have on a structured exercise program. I have lost more through a walking program than through dieting as well.

I discovered the walking and weight loss connection while I was a student in college. Most students gain between twenty and thirty pounds in their first year at school. For the first time in many students lives, they have to make their own decisions about eating and exercise. For many students a walking program consists of walking from the dormitory to the classroom and back.

I was one of the students who had no real walking program. I didn't make the connection between walking and weight loss right away. I wound up gaining twenty-five pounds in the first semester of college, but I didn't realize that I needed to connect walking and weight loss until I tried dieting.

Before I started a walking program in school, the idea of walking and weight loss being so closely tied together never occurred to me. Instead, like most people, I tried changing my diet. I ate salads at nearly every meal, I had no breakfast and I didn't really have a whole meal until the evening. I probably only took in about nine hundred calories each day, but even so I didn't see very good results. I had to think back to a time when I was fit to make the walking and weight loss connection.

I was a heavy student in high school and I dieted a lot. One diet was very successful for me during the end of my high school career. I was involved in an after school program that I attended every day. Since I could not ride the bus home from school, I simply walked the two mile journey home five days a week. I didn't consider this an actual walking program, but it really was. The only differences between my lifestyle in high school and in college were that I ate more and I walked almost every day.

Once I remembered the walking and weight loss connection, the rest was easy. I just started a simple walking program that consisted of taking a relaxing walk at least three times each week. I didn't worry too much about dieting, but I made sure to eat breakfast and to eat small meals throughout the day. I also avoided eating after eight o'clock in the evening. Within a few weeks, I found myself proving the walking and weight loss connection. I lost the twenty five pounds.
